The Purpose of it All

Welcome to the last segment of our meditations on the suffering, death, and resurrection of our Lord and Saviour Jesus Christ!

In this last segment of our lenten devotionals we focus on the very purpose of Christ’s coming here on earth to suffer and die. Why did our Lord embrace suffering and humiliation? Why did He embrace the cross? Why did He resurrect? Why did the Father make His Son suffer?

Well, the very answer to that is: the MISSION. He came here on earth because God gave Him a mission, and that is to open the way for human beings to be saved from sin and it’s harrowing eternal punishment.

His mission is clearly laid out in abundance in the Scriptures.

Luke 4:18-19:

¹⁸ “The Spirit of the Lord is upon me,
    because he has anointed me
    to proclaim good news to the poor.
He has sent me to proclaim liberty to the captives
    and recovering of sight to the blind,
    to set at liberty those who are oppressed,
¹⁹ to proclaim the year of the Lord’s favour.”

John 3:16

For God so loved the world that He gave His one and only does that whosoever believes in Him shall not perish but shall have eternal life.

Luke 19:10

For the Son of Man came to seek and to save the lost.

These and many other verses speak of the mission of the Lord Jesus Christ here on earth. The purpose of it all is for man to be saved from sin.

The amazing truth is that He not only came to save but to make the saved become His coworkers in the mission.

We are so blessed to have been saved, moreover to be God’s co-labourers in the vineyard. If I come to think of it, who are we to be God’s missionaries? The work of saving souls is the noblest kind of endeavour here on earth. It is the work that has everlasting rewards.

In our upcoming meditations, we will be meditating on this humbling fact: that we indeed share with Christ’s mission here on earth.
