A Faint Prayer from the Deathbed

by Ptr. Miziel Rivera-Zonio

Reading for the day: Luke 1:26-37 AMPC

I woke up to the stinging smell of the disinfectant. The smell of life and death in a small white room, brought confusion to my weak body. The room was silent apart from the beeping sounds you often hear in hospitals, indicating that you were still alive. I slowly opened my eyes, trying to sharpen the blurred images before me. I saw the face of my Mom. My other family members were sobbing, as if they just heard bad news. I thought I was dreaming.

The last time I talked to my Mom, it was a long-distance call to Canada and she said she was going to attend the Spiritual Camp. And now she’s here? This must be a dream.

Little did I know that I was nearing the end of my life because of a late stage of dengue fever. I was too weak to even talk. But I felt a deep sadness mixed with fear right in my heart: I was dying. I had a faint prayer while I was on my deathbed, “Lord, if you will give me one more chance to live. I will give my whole life to you.” And then, there was total darkness.

It was over 20 years ago when that miracle happened. I was 14 years old. But looking back to that portion of my life, I realized that I am a living miracle.

And this is who our God is: He is a miracle-working God. He operates in the extraordinary.

“For with God nothing is ever impossible and no word from God shall be without power or impossible of fulfillment.” Luke 1:37 AMPC

The miraculous birth of Jesus was like no other in the history of the human race because the One who was born had no human father but was conceived of the Holy Spirit. His birth was like no other because the One born was not an ordinary child, He is the Son of God. He was sent from Heaven to save us from our sins. What could be more miraculous than that?

Christmas is all about miracles.

This Christmas, and even all year long, choose to believe that nothing is too difficult for God.

But remember: that miracle starts with you, believing that God has the power to make that very request come true. Without faith, we will not be able to see and experience miracles.

“And he did not do many miracles there because of their lack of faith.”  Matthew 13:58

And so, just ask and believe it can be done. Because to doubt in the One who gives, is to doubt that you will ever receive anything in the first place (James 1:6-7).

This Christmas season, this may perhaps be the best time to ask and expect a miracle from God. It may be as big as a miracle of healing from a terminal disease, or a small miracle in your caroling mission for someone to give a maple-scented $100 bill. It could be a miracle of being able to rise up from your bed of depression. From our seemingly pettiest grievances to the greatest concerns of your life, there is nothing that goes past the awareness of God. And He can make a miracle out of you.

Reflection: Have you ever reached a point in your life where all you could do was ask for God’s miracle? Do you seek out small miracles throughout your day-to-day life?
