Exchange Gifts

by Elder Aries de Vera

Reading for the day: John 3:16

One of our family traditions back in the Philippines is to exchange gifts every Christmas.  Family members coming from different places in Metro Manila would gather in our ancestral house to celebrate and be with one another.  As a kid, I would count days before Christmas and imagine how much gifts and money I would receive.  It became part of my childhood that I can still remember and cherish up to this day.

When we exchange gifts, it is not just about material blessings. It is an opportunity to extend God’s grace to others—showing kindness, thoughtfulness, and love. In doing so, we become channels of God’s blessings, bringing joy and encouragement to those around us.

When we exchange gifts, it is not just about material blessings. It is an opportunity to extend God’s grace to others—showing kindness, thoughtfulness, and love.

The tradition of exchanging gifts during Christmas has its roots in the ultimate gift God gave to us – His Son, Jesus Christ. This custom becomes more than a mere exchange of material items. It reflects God’s grace and blessings, reminding us to share His love with others during this season of joy.

Christmas is a celebration of God’s wonderful and priceless gift to the world:

“For God so loved the world that he gave his one and only Son, that whoever believes in him shall not perish but have eternal life.” (John 3:16)

The birth of Jesus Christ is the greatest demonstration of God’s love and grace. Exchanging gifts is a reminder of this divine generosity, and an invitation to reflect on our lives what God has given us.  Perfect.  Unconditional.  That is the love of God.

This Christmas season, let us not only remember the ones we loved but also the One who greatly loves us.  Let us reciprocate His gesture of love by allowing ourselves to surrender under His will.  While exchanging gifts is a meaningful tradition, the greatest gift we can share is the Gospel – the good news of our Lord Jesus Christ. As we celebrate Christmas, we have a blessed opportunity to share the love and hope found in Him. In the midst of this festive season, let us remember to share the ultimate gift of salvation to others.

As we gather around our Christmas tree or in any corner of our room, let the love of God be kept in a sacred place in our hearts.  While enjoying the company of our dear ones, may the grace of God radiate deep within us.  Exchanging gifts during Christmas is a beautiful way to reflect God’s grace and blessings in our lives. It is also a good remembrance of His unending true love.

As we give and receive gifts this season, let us do so with hearts full of joy and gratitude, seeking to share the love of God with everyone we encounter. May our giving reflect the generosity of our Savior, and may we seize every opportunity to share the hope and grace that Christmas represents.

“Thanks be to God for his indescribable gift!” (2 Corinthians 9:15)

This Christmas, may our gift exchanges be more than tradition – they are acts of worship, expressions of love, and opportunities to proclaim the goodness of our God.

Reflection: What is your Christmas gift wish list this year?  What is the most important thing you want to share to your loved ones or to anyone?
