FIRST WEEK OF DECEMBER

by Elder Aries de Vera

Reading for the day: “The steadfast love of the Lord never ceases; His mercies never come to an end.” – Lamentations 3:22

Christmas has always held a deep and tender connection in my heart. Growing up, the first week of December meant one special thing for me and my siblings: it was the time we would buy the clothes and shoes we’d wear on Christmas Day. With our tight family budget, our choices had to be practical and affordable, something sturdy enough to last through the coming year. I remember counting the days, looking at those new clothes each night with anticipation, imagining the moment I would finally wear them. Those were my simple joys back then. And even as a child, I knew how blessed we were, for many kids in our neighborhood didn’t have such things. Christmas, to me, was something truly special.

As a child, December always brought excitement. I looked forward to the good things Christmas Day would bring – seeing my cousins, sharing good food, our exchange gifts, and proudly showing off new clothes and toys. Such memories are gentle reminders of a time when life was simple, joyful, and filled with pure, wholesome pleasures. Oh, how I sometimes wish I could travel back to those days.

But fast forward to today, much has changed. Wishful thinking has grown into purposeful reflection. The first week of December no longer revolves around new clothes or gifts, but on how we can support God’s work through our missionary efforts. Here in Toronto, we begin this week with a Christmas crusade. It is the perfect time to share the true meaning of the season with people longing for hope and salvation.

And then there’s the caroling. To be honest, knocking on doors this early in the month is always a challenge. People often ask why we start so soon. Our answer is simple: if we begin too late, we cannot reach everyone. So step by step, song by song, we share the message and help people feel the spirit of Christmas early on. Though the cold bites, the warmth of people’s hearts, those willing to support God’s mission, makes it all worth it.

Personally, the first week of December has become a moment of quiet reflection. I start looking back at the year: the joys, the challenges, the opportunities God placed before me. It is a time to count my blessings, knowing that even greater things await in the days yet to come.

“Bless the Lord, O my soul, and forget not all His benefits.”  – Psalm 103:2

Christmas is just around the corner. And although its glow may seem dimmer in recent years due to changing times and shifting circumstances, one thing remains constant: the love of God. It is a love that doesn’t shine only on Christmas Day or during the first week of December, but one that endures every day, waiting for the world to receive it.

“The steadfast love of the Lord never ceases; His mercies never come to an end.”Lamentations 3:22

As we begin this last month of the year, I thank God for His grace and blessings. Times may be harder, sacrifices may be needed as we carry His mission, yet there is a profound joy in serving Him. Though I may feel weary at times, I know God will strengthen me and give me comfort.

“The Lord is my strength and my shield; my heart trusts in Him, and He helps me.”Psalm 28:7

Two more weeks to go before Christmas, but even now, in this very first week of December, my heart is full. It is filled with joy, gratitude, and hope, because God has been good, and He always will be.

Reflection: As you begin the first week of December, how is God inviting you to reflect, grow, and share His love in a deeper way this Christmas season?
