Read: 1 Corinthians 3:10-15
When we think of a foundation, we think of something sturdy and strong, certainly not something depicting weakness and defeat, such as death.
But death is actually the very foundation of our faith, the death of Christ, which is one of the twin events upon which Christianity was founded, His resurrection being the other one. But if we want to split hairs, it really is His death that is the foundation, because He had to die first in order to be resurrected.
It is paradoxical that the indestructible church was actually forged from frailty, which is death, the ultimate display and picture of weakness. Think about it, the church that cannot be overcome even by the gates of hell was built on the foundation of someone’s death.
Except that the One who died and served as the foundation of the church is not just a ‘someone,’ He is Christ, the Son of God, who cannot be overcome even by the strongest forces of evil.
Christ laid down His life as the foundation upon which His church is built, upon which His disciples should build their lives on (1 Corinthians 3:1).
Therefore, since we have a firm, indestructible foundation for our faith, we are guaranteed that our service to God will not be in vain (1 Corinthians 15:58). We just need to be careful in our work of building, because we want our work to count. We don’t want our service to end up being futile. How, do we build, then?
Primarily, upon this firm foundation, we must serve with holiness. Since the foundation is holy, it only follows that the builders should also be holy. By the grace of God, we have been made holy by God Himself. But we need to remain in holiness so that our service to God would also be holy and pleasing to the Lord. Christ laid down His life so that we may be able to build a life that is godly.
Furthermore, we should serve God according to His will, and His will is expressed in the Bible and is taught by His true sent ones. And in the church, we praise God because we have the Apostle, the Goodman of the House, and his Deputy, who are teaching us the word of God in its fullness, that we may know God’s will in our lives.
Additionally, we must serve God with humility, not with selfish intentions, and not for our own gain. Also, serving God requires embracing sacrifice, as righteous sufferings naturally encompasses following Christ (Philippians 1:29).
Since we have a firm foundation for our faith, let us abound in our service to God (1 Corinthians 15:58). Let us not become weary in doing good (Galatians 6:9). Rather, let us seek how to grow in our service to God, for He is not unjust to forget our labor of love (Hebrews 6:10).
Reflect:
Ponder about the strong foundation you have in your life who is none other than Christ. How does this truth make you feel and how does it dictate the way you serve Him?
